Tour Plan

  • Elevation: 5,100 ft. to 9,000 ft.
  • Distance: 12 km / 7.5 miles
  • Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
  • Habitat: Rain Forest

We drive from Moshi to the Umbwe Gate, which is located on the southern side of Kilimanjaro. The hike starts through dense rainforest, with a steep and direct climb. The trail leads us to the Umbwe Camp, where we rest for the night, surrounded by the lush green forest.

  • Elevation: 9,000 ft. to 13,000 ft.
  • Distance: 6 km / 3.7 miles
  • Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
  • Habitat: Heath

Today, we begin with a steady climb out of the forest and into the heath zone, passing through beautiful rocky terrain. The Barranco Camp is located near the base of the Barranco Wall, where we will enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area. The night will be spent here at 13,000 ft.

  • Elevation: 13,000 ft. to 13,100 ft.
  • Distance: 5 km / 3.1 miles
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

We start the day by ascending the famous Barranco Wall, a steep rock face, which is a highlight of this route. After conquering the wall, we continue through the Alpine Desert zone and descend slightly to the Karanga Camp. We will have great views of the summit from here.

  • Elevation: 13,100 ft. to 15,300 ft.
  • Distance: 4 km / 2.5 miles
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Today, we continue the steep ascent through a barren landscape of rocky terrain and sparse vegetation. As we approach Barafu Camp, the high-altitude atmosphere begins to make the climb challenging. We rest at Barafu, preparing for the summit push.

  • Elevation: 15,300 ft. to 19,341 ft.
  • Distance: 6 km / 3.7 miles
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
  • Habitat: Arctic

This is the most difficult day of the trek. We begin our summit push around midnight, trekking through the cold, dark night. The steep, rocky ascent continues for several hours, and at sunrise, we will be at Gilman’s Point (18,600 ft.), where we are rewarded with magnificent views of the surrounding plains. A final push brings us to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

  • Elevation: 19,341 ft. to 10,065 ft.
  • Distance: 13 km / 8 miles
  • Hiking Time: 7-8 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert to Rain Forest

After taking in the views at Uhuru Peak, we begin our descent. The journey down can be hard on the knees, so trekking poles are recommended. We stop at Barafu for a break and continue down to Mweka Camp, which is nestled in the rainforest.

  • Elevation: 10,065 ft. to 5,380 ft.
  • Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
  • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Habitat: Rain Forest

On the final day of our trek, we descend through the lush rainforest to the Mweka Gate. Once we arrive at the gate, we will be presented with summit certificates to commemorate our achievement. A vehicle will be waiting to take us back to Moshi for a well-deserved rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

The dry season (June to October) is ideal for safaris, as wildlife gathers around waterholes and trails are clear for hiking. This period is also perfect for sunny beach days. The green season (November to March) offers lush landscapes and fewer crowds, making it a great time for birdwatching and snorkeling.

Children are welcome on safaris and beach tours, with many lodges offering family-friendly amenities. Hiking is more age-dependent, as treks like Kilimanjaro require physical endurance. For younger adventurers, shorter nature walks or cultural tours are excellent alternatives.

Yes! Tanzania tours are highly customizable. You can tailor your itinerary to match your interests, time, and budget. Popular combinations include a Serengeti safari followed by a Kilimanjaro trek and ending with relaxation in Zanzibar. Speak with your tour operator to craft a personalized experience.

Tanzania offers unmatched diversity for adventure seekers. Begin with a wildlife safari in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, hike iconic trails like Mount Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru, and wind down on Zanzibar’s white sandy beaches. Each destination offers unique experiences: witness the Great Migration on safari, challenge yourself with breathtaking treks, and dive into crystal-clear waters along the coast.

Tanzania is one of the few destinations where you can seamlessly combine world-class safaris, challenging treks, and tropical beach getaways. The variety of landscapes—from the savannahs of the Serengeti to the snowy peaks of Kilimanjaro and the turquoise waters of Zanzibar—makes it a one-of-a-kind adventure.

Tanzania’s beaches are perfect for unwinding after a safari or hike. Enjoy snorkeling in coral reefs, scuba diving with marine life, sailing on traditional dhows, or simply relaxing on the pristine shores of Zanzibar, Pemba, or Mafia Island. Don’t miss cultural tours in Zanzibar’s historic Stone Town.

A balanced itinerary typically takes 12–16 days. Spend 4–6 days exploring safari parks, 5–8 days hiking Kilimanjaro or Meru, and 3–4 days relaxing on the beach. If you prefer shorter trips, you can scale down to focus on two experiences—like a safari and beach escape. Custom options are always available.
